Energy Efficiency of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) has been steadily improving over the years. Rating systems have been developed to show the efficiency of different types of equipment: SEER for air conditioners, AFUE for furnaces, and COP for heat pumps. The efficiency of an older system can be estimated based on the year that it was manufactured or installed and the region of the country. To estimate the efficiency of a system, choose the region where you live, and pick the year that the system was installed.
